Lot 636
1652 Massachusetts Oak Tree Shilling Noe-1 Rarity-3 F12. Frosty light grayish steel with darker steel toning in protected areas. Most of the details are consistent with a slightly higher grade, but the strike is uneven as if often the case with these early pieces and some of the legends are missing. Most of the Oak Tree is strong. The date and denomination are bold. No roughness or contact marks. The only mark is a thin planchet fissure at the rim on the upper left of the obverse and lower left of the reverse (as struck). Weight 57.3 grains.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.

1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree Sixpence Noe-33 Rarity-5 NGC graded VF20. Attractive glossy light silvery steel with medium steel gray toning in the protected areas. No marks or planchet defects, just a slight vertical wave in the planchet created by the rocker press used to strike these thin silver pieces. The obverse (tree side) is misaligned to the top, as usual, while the reverse is properly centered on the planchet. The tree is clear while the date and VI denomination are bold. A very nice example of this tough denomination. Weight shown as 33.2 grains on the NGC label.
Estimated Value $1,600-UP.

1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree Threepence Noe-34 Rarity-4 PCGS graded XF45. Glossy light silvery steel with darker grayish steel toning in the protected areas. The planchet is a bit uneven and displays traces of microscopic roughness in the protected areas. The only marks are some fine horizontal scratches in the upper branches of the pine tree, but these are only visible with the aid of a glass. The obverse (tree side) is misaligned to the top, as usual on the variety, while the reverse is nicely centered on the small planchet. The design details that made it on to the planchet are clear. A nice example of this historic early American coinage. Pop 5; 23 finer.
Estimated Value $3,000-UP.

1787 Fugio Cent Newman 11-X Rarity-4 MS60. Lustrous light olive and dark bluish steel. Traces of mellowed red show in protected areas on the reverse. Possibly lightly cleaned long ago. No spots or contact marks. The only defect is an incomplete strike on the lower right of the obverse and opposing upper right of the reverse. The softness of strike in those places is typical and is associated with the intermediate die state, Newman state D. Otherwise the strike is very nice. The planchet is quite nice for a Fugio Cent showing only a few microscopic planchet flakes here and there but no voids. Struck slightly off center to K-4. Weight 146.7 grains.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.
